Did 'ya know dis?

Apple OS X's Built in Dictionary - Gizmodo

----

The replacement battery for the Powerbook arrived yesterday. Excited, I installed it and the computer wouldn't start up. Did the Power Management Recycle thing, and it started up. The replacement battery would not charge! Left it overnight and the battery meter showed 0% charge. Unplugged the power cord and the thing died. Replaced the original battery, recycled the power management, and the old battery worked just fine. Whew, at least the computer is still OK.

Another phone call to Apple. Went through the story a few times and they said a new battery will be shipped and I'm to return the replacement battery to them. So the saga continues. At least the folks at Apple were polite and courteous, from Toronto no less.

Oh Yea, so I don't loose it my dispach number is D9325029

Fabulous piece of work, Gegereka . I found a lot of old stuff, out of print so to speak.

Last Thursday I was at the city gas pump and ran into a fellow employee who was there when I was hired. I told him I heard he was a short timer, to which he replied "I'm on the way to park the truck right now and I'm never going to drive it again, that's it". I sometimes think I'll never get there but then how would I feel the last day? Mixed emotions at the least. I really enjoy my job 95% of the time. The worst of it is getting up so early in the morning. I've gotten up early all my life and I'm still not used to it. As you get older, the years slip faster they say so my time will come before I know it.

I pulled or otherwise screwed up a muscle in my back I guess yesterday, so it's home for a day of rest today. The vicoden seems to help and that's what the Doc prescribed it for. She thinks I have spinal stenosis and who am I to argue!

Yesterday I missed a day's work due to the storm. Until 2:00 it rained in sheets horizontally and by the time I could get to the truck I was soaked. I called in and there was not much going on so I laid out. At the front desk one fellow's answer to the predicament was to wear a swimsuit and carry all his work clothes in a plastic bag. I didn't want to get there that badly. Next week I'm out on vacation, so what's a day here and there?

Directional WiFi antenna

Hawking Technologies

Just what you need if that neighbor's just a wee bit too far away. Really, with houses as big as they're getting you might need this to pickup your own network.

For Rent

Think the "market" has a little problem? If you can't sell it , rent it.

Ya think this isn't a POS ? The damn thing doesn't even work right without Internet Explorer! Is this what we're to expect from Windows Live? If it is you can count me out. Everything Microsoft does seems to be about trying to steer the internet toward their tools and their tools only. It's no wonder they're worrying about Google and IBM. There is no way I'd hitch my wagon to the .net thing.

The Mayflower, my new home.

So what kinda luck is this? Both the iBook I gave Linda last Christmas and my PowerBook have the exploding batteries. Apple was good about it, saying they will ship the new battery then I'm to put the old one in the box and ship it back. Four to six weeks without a battery, bummer. Let's see just how long it takes.

He was Bill Clinton's Secretary of Labor and regardless of your politics, he's still a smart fellow.

Go ahead and ask why I want to get rid of my last PC. Why, because this old fart wears bifocals. The screen on a laptop is just right, no tilting my head back to get focus. The eye doctor even gave me a special pair of glasses for the computer but she screwed up the perscription. I have to sit too far away. I didn't take them back so I guess I'll just use them for spares. Besides, I was using them an inevidably, I would go to work with the wrong glasses on. That's how close they are to the other ones.

Appomatox court house

We've been in Appomattox the last couple of days running down a lead on a piece of propery to possibly buy.

It was a bit of a dissapointment. Power line running thru it, odd shape with not much depth to it, old house that would have to be torn down and worst of all, no view.

Lot's of history anound the place.

I've been fooling around with different blog tools and website creation tools and have come to the conclusion, blogger is good enough. I I'm worried about data loss, all my email and some data is stored on Google servers and so far, I've lost nothing.

2006.08.13

That's it.

I'm going to sell my last PC and go pretty much all Mac. I got hold of an old pII laptop running Windows 2000 just in case I have to have a PC for something. I want to clean off the desk and say goodby to Bill and friends. I'm off to buy Rapidweaver because it's too cool and redo my website again.

The iBook got here on Tuesday and I only shipped it last Saturday, I'm amazed. Works fine and Apple ate the whole thing. This sort of treatment my lead me into being one of those Apple fanboys.

2006.08.05

The sick iBook g3 will ship back to Apple today. The folks at Apple said it should take three to five business days total. Let's see.

It doesn't Usually Get This Hot Around Here

Weather forcast

Toady's forecast. Wakefield is our nearest NWS station. It's a bit inland so we can hope for a bit less here by the beach.

C Programming on OS X

I know, I know, OS X has the XCode thingy. I've downloaded and tried fourtyleventeen editors and have settled on Smultron. It's just enough to get by while compiling and running the proggies in terminal. When was the last time Microsoft GAVE you development tools that were'nt tied to their OS?

A lighter weight editor for c is mi. No help file and I still can't get the fonts so this old man can see 'em.

New Power Book

Well new to me. It arrived yesterday in all it's 1.67 ghz goodness, complete with 1 gig of memory. After using it last night, I believe I could well get by without a desktop machine at all. The wide screen is what does it. It'll take a couple of days to get the applications I feel necessary installed.

2006.07.25

Yes, I own one of the infamous G3 iBooks and it has served me well. That is until last week. I was about to tear into it until John at the computer booth sent me a copy of a support message from Apple. I knew about the extended warranty but had forgotten. Could I be so lucky? I actually found the original receipt and eureka I qualified by four months.

Called Apple and tomorrow I have to fax the receipt to them and await further instructions. Hey kids, the help desk is in California and Americans answered the phone! I may end up being an Apple fanboy if this works out.

2006.07.17

Yesterday I bought a new to me PowerBook on eBay. I swore I'd never buy anything that expensive on eBay, but the seller had 100% positive ratings and the PowerBook was just what I was looking for. Right now my fingers are crossed.

SDF

I broke down day before yesterday and became a sustaining member of SDF. I've hosted my web pages here for years and I can't think of a reason not to contribute to a host where the main man, smj, hangs out on the message board. If you are thinking of a personal site and want to learn a bit of UNIX, it's the place.

2006.07.08

Spent the best part of the day converting all the pages on my this site to php pages. Not much different as far as looks but so much more manageable. The site had just grown and grown over the years, and I never took the time to fix things. To tell the truth, I never figured it would get that big.

2006.07.05

That does it. No more vacations. My last vacation, I caught the flu, yesterday I broke my little toe. Fell on it due to a lounge chair around the pool. That'll teach me. This morning it was puffed up and black and blue. Taped it to the next toe and am keeping it elevated. Ouch!!
